Every Journey Deserves Better Company

Tanssu was built on a simple belief: that how you travel matters as much as where you're going.

Tanssu began with a frequent traveller who could not find a carry-on he wanted to own. After two decades of flying for work, our co-founder, Adir Shiffman, found that luggage went one of two ways: built to signal wealth, or bright and disposable. Very little was considered, yet it was functional and solid at once.

Tanssu set out to make a travel case worth owning. Not to sell travel as an escape, but to make the journey itself worth paying attention to.

The idea took shape in a Kyoto antiques store, where Adir came across a tansu.

A Name Rooted in History, Tradition, and Craft

Our name comes from tansu (箪笥), the storage chests made in Japan from the Edo period (1603–1868). Many were made to be moved, with iron handles or wooden wheels. Each was made for daily use, with a level of care that reflected its owner.

Choosing the name wasn't a branding exercise. It set the standard we hold ourselves to.

We added a second s to make it our own: familiar in spirit, new in form.

The Whole Journey

Each feature is designed around a moment in travel: the security queue, the seat, the hotel room.

Understated By Design

No loud logos and no seasonal colour drops. The product speaks for itself.

Built To Last

Durable, tested design, with materials chosen for their durability and how they age.

The Making Of A Modern-Day Tanssu

The founders set out to rethink the carry-on from first principles. Some of what they needed did not yet exist.

The Front Panel

18 months, 3 countries
The flush-knitted front panel and its hidden hinge took eighteen months to develop, and finding a maker willing to build it meant searching three countries. It swings open with no zip, straight to a padded laptop pocket, organiser pockets and an AirTag holder. Closed, it sits flush, and the case reads as one quiet surface.

The Wheels

10 iterations to perfect
The wheels were made for The Cabin, not chosen from a catalogue. Four 360° ball-bearing wheels, built like a skate's, carry it across a terminal floor, then marble, then cobblestone.

The Result

The First Edition
The result is The Cabin, designed in Melbourne, its marque barely visible. The first 999 are First Editions, each individually numbered on an embossed leather badge: a record of the first run, carried on every trip.

The founding team

A small team with roots in design, product and the airline industry, who travel the way our customers do.

We started Tanssu to make something we couldn't find. We have made it as carefully as we know how.
